Life can change in an instant. For Mwansa Mapesa, a 10-year-old boy living with his sister, the loss of his father marked a turning point filled with challenges and hope. Mwansa attends grade 1 at Siatibini Primary School, where he is not just a student but a young dreamer. His father, a fisherman who drowned in Lake Kariba while searching for food for the family, left behind a legacy of courage and sacrifice. Despite this tragedy, Mwansa’s spirit remains strong, and his dream of becoming a teacher shines brightly.

The Early Years and Family Background
Mwansa’s story begins in a small community near Lake Kariba, where life revolves around the lake and its resources. His father was a fisherman, a role that carried both responsibility and risk. Fishing was not just a job but a way to provide food and support for the family. When Mwansa was only eight years old, tragedy struck. His father drowned in Lake Kariba while trying to catch fish to feed his loved ones.
This loss left a deep void in Mwansa’s life. His mother was no longer in the picture, and he moved in with his sister, who became his guardian and support system. Despite the hardship, Mwansa’s sister made sure he continued attending school and stayed connected to his friends.
Life at Siatibini Primary School
Starting grade 1 at Siatibini Primary School was a fresh beginning for Mwansa. The school is a place where children from the village gather to learn, play, and dream about their futures. Mwansa enjoys playing with his friends during breaks, showing a joyful side that balances the weight of his family’s loss.
School is more than just a place for Mwansa; it is a source of hope and opportunity. His teachers have noticed his eagerness to learn and his respectful nature. They see in him a child who, despite his young age, understands the value of education.
The Dream of Becoming a Teacher
Mwansa’s dream is clear: he wants to become a teacher. This aspiration is rooted in his experiences and the people around him. He has seen how teachers can shape lives, offering knowledge and guidance that open doors to new possibilities.
For Mwansa, becoming a teacher means more than a career. It represents a chance to give back to his community and inspire other children who face difficulties like he has. He wants to be the kind of teacher who encourages students to believe in themselves and work hard.
Challenges on the Path to Education
Mwansa’s journey is not without obstacles. Living with his sister means resources are limited. School supplies, uniforms, and meals are not always guaranteed. The community around Lake Kariba faces economic hardships, and many children struggle to stay in school.
Despite these challenges, Mwansa’s determination remains strong. His sister supports him by prioritizing his education, and the school provides a nurturing environment. Local initiatives sometimes offer assistance, such as free meals or school materials, helping children like Mwansa continue their studies.
